Teeth Whitening

A woman in dental chair smiling while receiving teeth whitening treatment at a dental clinic. We all look in the mirror when we get up and start getting ready to face the world in the morning. When our teeth begin to not look as bright as they once did, we think about doing something to improve it. As we age, our teeth often start to look stained or discolored, lacking the luster they once did. Tooth enamel grows more porous over time and can be stained much easier, the enamel drawing from the food and drinks we consume. Those of us who use tobacco products or drink coffee or tea, are more likely to see those stains than those who do not. Even certain fruits can stain our teeth.

One way to turn back time and recreate our bright smiles is through a professional teeth whitening procedure. In less than an hour, at one appointment, we can apply a whitening treatment and brighten your smile immediately. Anyone who has thought about brightening their smile should come in to find out more information at Brian K. Dennis, DDS.

Whitening Concerns

At-home whitening solutions may sound tempting, but they can cause permanent damage to both the teeth and the gums. Part of the problem is that at-home kits are applied without someone monitoring the treatment to make sure no part of the mouth becomes overexposed to the solution. The effects of over-the-counter treatments also do not last as long as those applied professionally.

Over the Counter Solutions vs Professional Solutions

At-home whitening kits are manufactured with a one-size-fits-all mentality, so there is no customization and no adjustments to be made. Professional whitening treatments can take into account the color and shade of your teeth to make sure the solution does not overly whiten the teeth.

Over-the-counter treatments use a carbamide peroxide solution of 10-20%, while our professional solution is much higher. Professional whitening solutions typically fall around the 40% range.

With so many options available for at-home treatment solutions, the American Dental Association weighed in on the situation issuing a warning to consumers. They stated that when at-home whitening solutions are not used appropriately, they can cause irreversible damage and sensitivity.

With the potential for causing widespread, permanent damage to your teeth, we suggest professional teeth whitening only.
