Top 5 Benefits of Invisalign

Team Invisalign

If it seems like Invisalign is everywhere, there’s a good reason. In fact, there are many reasons that so many patients are finally choosing to improve the appearance of their smile. Read on to learn about the top 5 benefits of correcting your smile with Invisalign.

1. Invisalign Offers Discretion

Let’s face it, traditional metal braces are noticeable. There’s no way to hide them when smiling, laughing, or eating. While it’s perfectly normal to see tweens and adolescents wearing braces, adults are less keen to invest in bulky, obvious metal braces.

The nearly invisible nature of Invisalign is the primary reason that adults opt for Invisalign. As long as you take good care of your Invisalign trays, with regular brushing, rinsing, and removal whenever you eat or drink anything other than water, the trays are likely to go unnoticed by most people.

Invisalign is so discreet that many patients find that others don’t even notice they are wearing them in person, or in pictures.

2. Invisalign Offers Enhanced Comfort

Smooth, plastic retainers, with rounded edges, are certainly more comfortable than metal brackets that are bonded to your teeth. Invisalign trays do not irritate the soft tissues inside the lips and cheeks, as bracket braces often do. However, you should know that both Invisalign and braces will create a sensation of pressure.

Remember, you are shifting the position of the teeth within the bone, which can at times be uncomfortable.  However, you won’t ever have to worry about a wire snapping in your mouth, or having to apply wax to your brackets to protect your lips and cheeks.

3. Invisalign Gives You Freedom to Eat Whatever You Want

If you choose to correct your smile with traditional brackets and wire braces, a variety of foods will be off-limits during your treatment. These include things like popcorn, nuts, hard candies, hard rolls or crusty bread, pretzels, or chewy or sticky candy. These foods must be avoided as they have the potential to snap a wire or otherwise damage a bracket.

By contrast, you can eat literally anything you want while undergoing cosmetic dental treatment with Invisalign because the trays are removable. Simply remove the trays before eating, and if possible brush your teeth and trays before putting your trays back in after you eat. If brushing isn’t possible, rinsing your mouth and your trays is the next best thing.

4. Invisalign May Promote Better Oral Health

Correcting your bite and straightening your teeth with Invisalign allows you to floss normally, and brush the entire surface of your teeth. You won’t need to use specialized flossing tools or toothbrushes. Because there is no change to how you brush and floss your teeth, you’re able to better remove plaque and debris which cause tooth decay. Moreover, with metal braces, the brackets are bonded to your teeth, so you cannot brush the surface of the tooth beneath the bracket. This can lead to discoloration when the braces are removed.

5. Invisalign Requires Fewer Appointments During Treatment

Metal braces must be adjusted (also known as “tightened”) frequently by your orthodontist, throughout your treatment.  This is because the archwire that runs through the brackets helps to pull your teeth into alignment.

Invisalign works differently. Each set of trays in your series is slightly more aligned than your teeth. Your teeth will move to fit into the trays as you wear them. The result is fewer appointments during your treatment.  However, this means that you are responsible for wearing your trays 20-22 hours per day. Failing to wear your trays as prescribed will result in prolonging your treatment.
